BOE Mag: One on One interview with Ming Ray
ON SHOOT WITH MING RAY
Her designs are unmistakable. She’s Everywhere from Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge to flooding influencers and A-listers social media accounts with her timeless box-bags with shooting stars or hearts handles to delicate Swarovski crystal butterflies.
As I enter the room to greet her, she’s turns around and moves quietly towards me with a smile on her face and says hello. Today’s shoot is in the all new, state of the art suite at The Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge.
Ming Ray had neatly displayed her beautiful bags in the ‘petit salon’ of the suite for me to select from. I invited her to join my photoshoot because there was no better way to celebrate our collaboration. Ming Ray is also wearing one of Morv's dresses.
She’s got great energy and best of all, she’s humble.

How did you decided to start your own brand?
When I saw John Galliano’s first collection for Dior on TV back in 1997 (when I was 8) it touched me so deeply that I knew right then and there I wanted to become a designer. Initially I just wanted to work for big fashion houses, but after work experience at Alexander McQueen and Jimmy Choo I felt I wasn’t expressing my true potential and creativity so I decided to start my own brand.
Prior to living in London, what was the city you called home?
Before London, Singapore was my home away from home.
What does a typical day look like for a high end designer like yourself? A typical day is usually always hectic. I usually wake up around 6am and the first thing I do is meditate for 20 minutes. After having my usual fruit and veggie smoothie for breakfast I start working right away: managing production by emailing factories and suppliers on a daily basis, answering PR and client requests, drawing hundreds of rough designs on sketch book, rendering chosen designs on photoshop... my work continues till bedtime because the US is a few hours behind UK which means my day starts again around 6pm to answer emails from the US.
Who has been your greatest fashion inspiration?
My inspirational idol changes over time.
John Galliano was my beacon for 10 years, then I became hopelessly obsessed with Alexander Mcqueen like everyone else. Then Ricardo Tisci, Christian Lcroix, Viktor&Rolf, Ellie Saab.
The thing is, I started as a fashion designer, so when my vocation shifted to accessories, my inspirational figures shifted too... As a result I have so many over the years and each had a huge impact on my style
What are your favorite luxury brands?
My favourite brands are Elie Saab, Marchesa, Ralph&Russo, Yeprem and de Grisogono
Whats the last thing you bought online?
The last thing I bought online was a Preen dress from MATCHESFASHION.COM
When's the next time you are flying and to where?
December 21st will be the next time I travel. To Jerusalem for the first time. I’m super excited to experience Christmas in one of the most holy cities on earth.
